Overall, I'm pleased with the results. Deciding to prime black was a mistake, as it took several coats of the light colors I chose for the color scheme to cover the black undercoat.
Here is the final result. I took the color scheme from an old Buck Rogers tin toy. |
The original cup. |
First, I pulled out the plastic straw. Then I primed with Krylon Fusion Flat Black |
I cut a small piece of card to fit in the window where the hole for the cup's straw was located. |
A view of the reverse side. |
Another view at a slightly higher angle. I used some old Space Marine vehicle decals to add some detail. |
A view looking down from the top. |
I really like that! An excellent pulpy rocket!
ReplyDeleteReally nice!
ReplyDeleteNice quick and simple. Well done!
ReplyDeleteThanks all for the kind remarks!
ReplyDeleteHello Chris,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your two articles and blog.
I have a quick question. Were you ever to open the slippy the cups? I was able to buy a lot of them, but just now time is allowing me to work on them. I have not been able to open the cup to remove the straw, just cut it. Now I have part of the moving every time I move the cup.
Thank
James-
DeleteYes, I was able to open them...they do in fact open. But your comment makes me remember that it was really difficult to figure out how to do it. And It's been so long I can't recall what the answer was. Have you tried unscrewing the top?
Hello Chris,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the quick answer.
I have tried unscrewing the top. It just twists like a stripped screw, on all the ones I have tried. I will keep trying The cup should work great for gaming. I am looking forward to painting them.
Hmmm...then maybe it pops off. Like I said, it's been awhile and I don't remember exactly. Have you tried prying it off with a screwdriver or knife?
DeleteYou are correct. It does pop off. I now understand why they were on sale. They make lousy slippy cups, but great pulp rockets.
ReplyDeleteThanks for article on how to make a cool rocket.
You're welcome! So, I can assume you finally had success in getting the tops off?
DeleteNow we know why they all ended up on clearance! :)
You are right, I finally got the top to pop off. What a bad design for a slippy cup, worked out for us looking for a pulp rocket ship.
ReplyDeleteChris,
ReplyDeleteHow did you do the door? And did you use masking to paint on the windows and the gold bands? In any case, they look great!
Berst regards always,
Chris
P.S. And thanks again for the Frostgrave game!
Chris-
DeleteGlad to hear you enjoyed the Frostgrave game! And thanks for the kind words regarding these little space ships. The door is just molded on. I didn't add anything to it, just painted what was there.
And, no, no masking tape was use, I just did it freehand, and went back and painted over any mistakes.
Now I know for sure I'll have to prowl the aisles at my local Target! I'm putting together the Nazis necessary for "Eat Hitler" (harder than you might think), as well as their "time machine". With the addition of a couple of swastikas and similar Deutsche marking, one of these will do very nicely!
DeleteChris
Sadly, Target only carried them that one year, and soon put them all on clearance, as they seemed to be a product failure from a sippy cup perspective. Your best bet these days would be ebay. If I ever see one, I'll grab it for you.
DeleteI just found one on eBay for just under $11--that seems like a lot, but I don't know how much Target was charging originally. Should I go for this, or look around some more?
ReplyDeleteChris
Yes, they're somewhat desirable, so often folks ask premium prices. As I remember they were around $1.50 to $1.99 on clearance. Probably about $5.00-$6.00 retail. As to whether you wait or go for it, that depends on how much in a hurry you are. It does seem a little high, but who knows when another will be listed.
DeleteI'll wait, I guess. I don't need it as a rocket per se anyway, I just thought it might work as a Nazi Time Machine. Since there is no right or wrong with that design, I'll keep thinking about it (unless a cheap zippy cup does turn up!)
DeleteThanks,
Chris
